+ OUHSC PA Program stats for the class of 2019

Before you read any further stop and remember not to compare yourself to others. You have strengths and personal qualities that have gotten you this far; there is no need to compare and degrade yourself. You are intelligent and driven and going to succeed at whatever you put your mind to. I personally have to remind myself of this regularly because I fall into the bad habit of looking at other’s grades, experiences, beauty, etc. and feel less than extraordinary about myself. Yes, someone may have better grades than you, but you may have more awesome hands on experiences. You truly are unique, and you cannot get so lost in others that you forget yourself. The application and all of the numbers you put down on paper are important, but a lot of us look similar in that aspect. Your personal statement and interview are where you can really shine and show the committee that you have the passion and grit to survive PA school and eventually become a caring provider.
-My stats and experiences.
The easiest way for me to share this with you is by using the final resume I submitted based off of the resume template I was given by OUHSC PA Program. (Some formatting changes might occur based on your device.)

The Big Event
As you can see from my resume, I had very little patient care experience. I was extremely worried because that is a major thing that the admissions committee looks at. However, I had great grades, lots of medical volunteering, and I shadowed a PA in almost every specialty that is included in the clinical portion of the program so it all worked out for me in the end. Like I said before, do not compare yourself. Everyone is different, and you never know exactly what the program is looking for. Some schools do not emphasize previous healthcare experience hours and others vary on the prerequisites that are required. Always check with the programs you are applying to make sure you have fulfilled the requirements and understand the type of students and qualities they typically accept.
-OUHSC Class of 2019 stats
Total GPA: 3.42
Science GPA: 3.29
Last 60 hours GPA: 3.62
GRE: 300
I scored a 309 my first try and did not retake it. This is not a great score in general, but GRE scores are not weighted heavily for getting accepted. I suggest taking a practice exam or using the online study materials. I also had an app on my phone for studying vocabulary.
Residency in state: 68%
Residency out of state: 32%
As of this year, OUHSC does not give preference to in state students or students who attended OU for undergrad.
Accepted repeat applicants: 48%
Patient contact hours: 3496 hrs.
You can gain these hours working as a phlebotomist, nurses aid, medical assistant, medical mission trips, EMT, scribe, ER tech, etc. The CASPA website FAQ will have a section that will help you determine if your job or volunteer experiences were patient care/hands on care, healthcare experience, or other.
Shadowing hours: 218 hrs.
The PASO website does not have very many PAs listed and most book quickly. Call around to local clinics and hospitals to see if the PAs there accept student shadows.
I will keep you updated as soon as I receive the stats for the Class of 2020.
Best of luck,
Destiny
